You’re sure to find lots of ‘lands’ here - someone at Nintendo HQ decreed that the diminutive handheld simply couldn’t contain massive ‘worlds’, so Super Mario Land ushered in an era of ‘Land’ games from the likes of Kirby, Donkey Kong and Wario.Īs with our lists of the 50 best Switch games and other Nintendo console Top 50 lists, the ranking here is governed by the game’s user rating on this very site. While Tetris and Pokémon were the system sellers, there’s a vast library of games released for the system Although this marked a transition away from the OG hardware, the Game Boy line continued to enjoy almost 100% backwards compatibility up until the Micro variant of the Game Boy Advance in 2005. A smaller, lighter revision of the hardware, the Game Boy Pocket, also arrived that year, and the console’s true successor – the Game Boy Color – would launch worldwide two years later alongside the western release of Pokémon. Image: Damien McFerran / Nintendo LifeĪny video game company would be overjoyed to have a game with half the appeal of Tetris on its books, but after seven years – when you’d expect the console to be winding down – the Game Boy got the biggest second wind in video game history with the Japanese release of Pokémon Red & Green in 1996. The story of its convoluted journey to the console is well worth investigating – a thrilling combination of guile, subterfuge and blind luck that went on to shape Nintendo and the video game industry at large. Obviously, it had the archetypal killer app in Tetris, and many still insist it’s the finest version of Alexey Pajitnov's puzzler. Of course, it’s software which makes or breaks any console and the humble Game Boy could never have endured so long without its catalogue of incredible games. The Switch itself, and novel experiments such as Labo VR, show that this approach continues to keep the Kyoto company in rude health. Gunpei Yokoi’s design philosophy – using proven, inexpensive components in new and interesting ways – continued through Nintendo's handheld line and carried over to its home consoles with Wii. Rival companies got carried away with the technical possibilities and contemporary handheld consoles with far superior specs fell by the wayside as Game Boy marched on. Primarily the work of Satoru Okada and Gunpei Yokoi, the console was designed to a specific price point and goal to be a practical portable device. ![]() Gunpei Yokoi’s design philosophy – using proven, inexpensive components in new and interesting ways – continued through Nintendo's handheld line ![]() More importantly, its limitations proved to be strengths in the long run that blurry monochrome screen used significantly less power than a backlit colour equivalent, and therefore gave the portable decent battery life – an essential factor to consider when your handheld relies on AA batteries to function away from a wall socket. The 8-bit machine with the 160x144 pixel LCD screen might have been modest in the specs department, but it was just powerful enough to offer deep gaming experiences, with the best examples rivalling those on home consoles. The company’s Game & Watch line let you take limited gaming experiences on the go, but the Game Boy was a different beast entirely. 33 years ago the video gaming landscape would be forever changed as Nintendo opened up the new frontier of portable gaming to the masses. Our recent partnership with Niricson is a good example of how we can leverage digital technology to assess the condition of infrastructure in a non-invasive way without disruption to commuters.Īs the clock continues to tick towards 2050, we must prioritize solutions to redefine our green future. We can use technology to get the best performance from our assets - from monitoring for wear and tear, and through AI identifying issues and taking action before failure, so we can in fact, maintain our assets as opposed to fixing them. We are increasingly partners in the long-term management of critical city infrastructure. We do more than plan, design, build and walk-away. We have exciting plans to expand this to broader infrastructure projects globally, and by adopting a life cycle approach to the holistic performance of mobility projects that consider whole-of-life environmental, social, and economic factors, we’ve empowered our clients to unlock new, innovative opportunities.Īs engineers, our role continues to evolve. Those statistics identify a huge opportunity but also speak to the size of the problem.īy embedding sustainable decision-making into the early design process, Arcadis created a powerful sustainability assessment tool to measure embedded carbon and help our clients select the most carbon-efficient and long-term sustainable pavement options alongside cost considerations. The annual production of asphalt is about 10 million metric tonnes per year, and the annual use of bitumen is more than 800,000 metric tonnes. My home country of Australia for example has around 800,000 km of road – of which 310,000 km is surfaced. We know that there are around 7.4kg CO2 emissions per square meter of pavement each year of design life. Recent work we did with the WBCSD showed that data sharing can reduce carbon emissions from EV charging infrastructure by 15% and improve grid capacity. The need for mobility isn’t going anywhere, but data can help us better understand current trends, usage patterns, anticipate future demands, and optimise infrastructure design and maintenance to ensure we’re not replacing one bad solution with another. Data acts as the smooth asphalt under our wheels, paving the way forward for future mobility solutions, and steering us towards our looming green horizon. Our world 27-years from now will be the product of both vision and data. can commit to not selling petrol cars by 2035, then what can our policy makers and project owners commit to, to lighten the collective carbon footprint? The answers I often hear are very fluid perhaps flights and aeroplanes won't exist anymore, or else in Jetson’s style EV take-off landing vehicles will dominate travel in cities. If every company in the world is collectively aiming for net zero carbon by 2050, what does our future actually look like? With infrastructure projects often taking decades to move from planning to the end product, we must act urgently to build a sustainable future.īack to the future…In solving for 2050, we often look forwards, but need to work backwards to redefine our future. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are our transport networks. The transportation sector is a known and significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and without major changes in policy, public and private investment, it will be nearly impossible to achieve our global decarbonization goals. Rhetoric and good intentions can easily distract us from getting on with the important work of effecting change. Our world is getting very hot, and there's a dwindling supply of shade, hats, and sunscreen left to slap on the problem. If you're in Australia or New Zealand though, that expands to nine.Īs wildfires and heatwaves soar across Europe and the US, we're left with an ever-present reminder of how unprepared we truly are for the effects of climate change. It's a mere 27 years away – that’s five or six rounds of election promises from hopeful politicians vying for their spot at the top in many democratic countries like the UK, India, Canada, South Africa, or South Korea. It's a year that looms large as a critical milestone for many companies on their path to net zero. More recently, the industrial internet of things (IIoT) has emerged as a disruptive computing paradigm with applications across various domains such as smart cities, manufacturing, and healthcare. And again, files transferred through Windows Explorer and all other backup software I've used are copied/backed up at the full speed of whatever external backup drive is plugged in - this is an issue with FreeFileSync itself.
